New York City Played Host to Liukin for first JCPenney Tour Stop to Celebrate Girl Empowerment, Individuality and the Supergirl in All Young Girls

BURBANK, Calif., — July 26, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), on behalf of DC Comics, JCPenney and five-time Olympic Medalist and World Champion Nastia Liukin, joined forces in New York City this past Saturday to debut an all new collection of clothing for girls called Supergirl by Nastia. The event is part of a five-market tour, visiting JCPenney stores around the country. As part of the tour, Nastia is providing young girls motivational advice on achieving their goals, feeling confident and being smart, strong and empowered—being a Supergirl. Liukin also introduced the new fun, affordable lifestyle collection, which is available exclusively at JCPenney stores nationwide.
 
Liukin was on hand to host the action-packed, kick-off event at New York’s Greeley Square Park in front of JCPenney, which featured live gymnastic exhibitions, dance performances, fashion presentations and even onsite stretching and tumbling classes for young girls. Nastia also hosted a meet and greet for attendees and prizes were awarded to lucky winners throughout the event.

“The New York kick-off event was such an incredible way to introduce Supergirl by Nastia to young girls and help communicate a message of empowerment,” said Liukin. “It was so much fun to interact with all of the girls and I am thrilled to be able to continue hosting the remaining events all across the country!”

Following Saturday’s debut in New York City, the tour is set to make additional stops in Dallas, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; and Orlando, Florida. Joining in all markets will be kids from JCPenney’s Afterschool Fund and other local community groups who will enjoy an empowering message from Nastia, as well as the opportunity for prizes, including a shopping spree for back-to-school clothes, courtesy of JCPenney.

The Supergirl by Nastia collection features trend-right, affordable apparel that encourages a message of empowerment, creativity, strength, intelligence and independence—the symbolic attributes and S-Shield of Supergirl, the iconic DC Comics super heroine. The collection, created for today’s 4-12-year-old girls, is now available exclusively at JCPenney, just in time for the back-to-school season.

The line retails from $20 - $38, making it affordable and exciting for girls to style themselves like a Supergirl. The collection includes active fleece, dresses and tunics, knit pants, signature Supergirl tees, dancewear, fashion leggings, shrug tops and more.

Nastia will conduct personal appearances to promote Supergirl by Nastia at the following JCPenney locations:

• July 31: Frisco, TX — Stonebriar Mall
• August 7: Schaumburg, IL — Woodfield Mall
• August 21: Glendale, CA — Glendale Galleria
• August 28: Orlando, FL — The Florida Mall

For the past four years, Warner Bros. has been supporting female athletes with the Supergirl Jam, the only large-scale, all-girls action sports competition and lifestyle/music festival. Gymnastics fans don't need to be in Worcester, Mass. this weekend to witness some of the world's top gymnasts and rising stars. All you need is a TV and computer tuned to Universal Sports for LIVE coverage of the 2010 Tyson American Cup.

Our coverage kicks off on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET with the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup, a new all-around competition that will feature 36 of the country's up-and-coming young female gymnasts. GK is the apparel sponsor for this gymnastics event.

The main event is Saturday's Tyson American Cup, an event that has featured a stellar cast of U.S. Olympic gymnastics stars, including Mary Lou Retton, Bart Conner, Blaine Wilson, Shannon Miller, Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin, Jonathan Horton, Shawn Johnson and Paul Hamm, as well international greats like Nadia Comaneci.

Scheduled to compete this weekend are 2009 world all-around silver medalists Rebecca Bross, 2008 Olympic horizontal bar silver-medalist and reigning U.S. all-around champion (and GK endorsee) Jonathan Horton, and 2010 Winter Cup Challenge champion Chris Brooks.

Reigning Tyson American Cup mens gymnastics champion and 2008 Olympic horizontal bar bronze-medalist Fabian Hambuechen of Germany highlights the international field that consists of seven 2008 Olympians and three 2009 World medalists, including 2009 World all-around silver-medalist Daniel Keatings of Great Britain, 2009 World vault silver-medalists Ariella Kaeslin of Switzerland and Flavius Koczi of Romania, 2009 World all-around fifth-place finisher Maxim Devyatovskiy of Russia, 2009 World vault-finalist Elsa Garcia of Mexico, and World Cup floor exercise bronze-medalist Elisabeth Seitz of Germany.

Inside Gymnastics’ Amanda Whitley catches up with 2008 Olympic Champ Nastia Liukin for a quick chat about what’s ahead in 2010!

Talk to me a bit about the Luikin Cup in Connecticut.

It’s the first year for it and we’ve been working on it since last summer. It’s all coming together and it’s something I’m really looking forward to also. It’s right outside of Boston and I’ll be there the week after next doing some promoting for it. I also just finished designing the leotards that the all girls will get with GK Elite so everyone will be getting a leotard and a warm up.

Sounds like you have a lot going on and it’s going to be a busy 2010 for you!

Yeah, I do have so many things, but everything is something I’m really looking forward to and I’m trying to balance it all. I’m excited about the Cup and Camp plus getting back in the gym, hopefully. It’s going to be a great year and I’m ready for it.

With so many athletes in GK at the same event, it is a challenge to keep everyone looking unique and set apart.  We outfitted a total of 24 clubs for this one single event (and that doesn’t even include the men’s clubs!), and there were 48 different leotard style/ color combinations and 30 warm-up styles.  On Prelim night for the senior women, 18 of the 19 competitors were in GK.  On Finals night, the magic number was achieved – 100% GK!  The challenge now for next year is 100% both nights, while still giving everyone of them a feeling of being the best out there!
