Stars Gymnastics Lights up HNI in their Custom GK Leotard

Congratulations to Stars Gymnastics of Houston for all their wins at the Houston National Invitational in TX last weekend! These determined athletes were ready to go on game day with their brilliant custom design leotard that continues to wow us over and over again!

GK Custom Design Competitive Gymnastics LeotardBack View of Stars Gymnastics Custom Design Competitive Leotard by GK

The Stars Black Mystique competition leotard with White Mystique design lines along the bodice and neckline is a true testament to the team and their name. While the mystique fabric gives this leotard a beautiful shimmer, the team Custom Design GK Leotard in Black and White Mystiqueadded loads of definition with Brillance SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS that adorn not just the white design details throughout, but also the Natural Shadow proof lined Black Mesh that covers the sleeves and secures the strappy back. Ruby SWAROVSKI ELEMNENTS add a subtle hint of color to the black and white silhouette. The most striking element of this leo has to be the stars and cascading jewel design.  These starlit ladies certainly deserve to shine in this sophisticated and feminine competitive leo.

With GK, the design possibilities are endless.  If it's glamour and sparkle you're looking for to boost the aesthetics of your routine, shop our Ultimate Brilliance Collection for your next big meet. Be sure to check out some of the other great men's competitive shirts and women's competitive apparel seen at HNI on our post about our sponsorship of the Houston National Invitational.

Kim Zmeskal's Legendz Classic Texas Prime Meet Features GK Sublimated Leotards

The qualifying events for the Nastia Liukin Cup on February 28,2014 are almost complete. Looking back, we were excited to see the first American gymnastics World Champion, Kim Zmeskal-Burdette, enjoying herself alongside the first American gymnastics Olympic Champion, Mary Lou Retton, at the Legendz Classic Texas Prime Meet. The meet is hosted each year by Kim and her husband's, Chris Burdette, gym, Texas Dreams Gymnastics, in January. Kim Zmeskal-Burdette is a former Olympic gymnast and the first American gymnast to win an all-around gold medal in the World Championships. Today, she is an active USAG coach, and she has a lot of Olympic hopefuls for 2016 at her gym right now. As stated below,

Kim has chosen GK leotards throughout her career. She chooses nothing less for the Texas Dreams. "The Texas Prime Meet combines all of my favorite elements of competition as I moved up through the ranks of the sport of gymnastics.  GK Elite has always been a huge part of my own career, and having a long standing tradition of outfitting the best gymnasts, as they showcase the highest levels of gymnastics, of course I wanted them to represent us at my 'prime' competition.  Each year, the design of our Legendz leotard is unique, classy, and a wonderful keepsake for gymnasts to remember their special experience at the meet. This year, we chose GK's new sublimation leotards - we had creativity at our fingertips. The girls loved the fit and look and we can't wait to design again for next year.  I'm proud to support GK Elite."

The 2013 Legendz Classic leo is a round neck racer back tank leotard. GK uses the best "professionals' choice" Italian inks on all our Sublimated Designs to insure that any GK item, whether it be a women's gymnastics capri, a men's compression shirt, or a gym sling bag, is printed with intense colors, clear lines and less fading. The Legendz leo is a testament to this quality as it features a sublimated sweeping Columbia Blue starry sky design on a pure black background that is bright and beautiful. The Kim Zemskal Texas Prime Meet logo is also sublimated on this leo, however other options are available as well. See our Sublimation Form for additional selections in fabrics, colors, lazer or heat transfer jewels and sequinz.

Sublimated Leotards are an excellent choice for special events, such as the Legendz Classic, but we've also seen some awesome gym shorts and competition leotards as well. So the next time you see a design, picture or pattern that inspires you send it our way and we'll help you turn that inspiration into your team's next winning look.

GK Vice President of Global Gymnastics Sales, Wendy Marshall Martin and GK Business Development Specialist, Calli Campo told us that the hosts, Houston Gymnastics Center, did a fabulous job planning this meet, "...great location and space. The coach’s hospitality room was upstairs from the competition floor, but overlooked the meet. This was great for coaches to grab food, relax, and still be able to watch their kids." These ladies, along with GK Sales Representative, Ms. June, set up a booth between the three gyms and handed out mints, lip gloss and GK Catalogs. They also displayed an array of our newest selection of leotards, released to the public just last month.

The next time you're at a big meet, stop by to say hello to GK where you're sure to find your next favorite workout leotard, and maybe even a small gift. And, if you weren't wearing a GK Women's Competitive Leotard or a men's Under Armour or GK Competitive Shirt for this event, make sure your team is prepared to compete with the best next time, in the most sought after gymnastics apparel in the industry, GK.

Everyday Champion: Kathryn

Meet Kathryn, a 6 year old, Level 3 gymnast from Pennsylvania who just got a brand new Aly leo from Santa!

Kathryn loves all of the Fierce Five Olympic gymnasts, especially Aly and Gabby, so this was the perfect gift for her. The bars and vault are her favorite events and she loves to flip on the tumble track. Kathryn is going to be the envy of her fellow gymnasts in this Berry and Sangria Mystique Aly Raisman Feather V neck Workout Leo E2338 as she trains to compete for her gymnastics team next year. She loves all the pink in this leo, but she adores the asymmetrical feather design highlighted with silver hologram sequinz. It's all about the sparkle.

Katherine, you look precious in your new leo! GK wishes you the best in your training.

Sportsman of the Year, Epke Zonderland in GK

We are excited to congratulate Epke Zonderland from the Netherlands who was recently named Dutch Sportsman of the Year! He won the high bar title at the World 2013 Championship Artistic Gymnastics in Antwerp, Belgium where we had a temporary GK store set up with some of our hottest styles in gymnastics apparel.

It is now the fourth time in five years that 2013 World Horizontal Bar champion Epke Zonderland has been named Sportsman of the Year in the Netherlands. He has so much going for him at 27 years old, a current medical student and now being named his country's top athlete. The very first time Zonderland won the Dutch Sportsman of the Year title was in 2009, the same year he earned the silver medal on the Horizontal Bar at the World Championships. He then went on to take silver at the World Championships the very next year in 2010 and the European title in 2011. Zonderland's biggest moment was when he won the 2012 Olympic gold medal on the Horizontal Bar. His risky routine earned him his infamous nickname, "The Flying Dutchman." He became the first Dutch male gymnast to win an Olympic medal in London at that time.

We are especially excited that Epke is proud to wear our gymnastics apparel for his workouts and competitions. Shown on the right is a sketch of Zonderland's GK gymnastics competitive apparel. Our special order Edgy Men's Gymnastics Competition Shirt 1960 is a Black Nylon/Spandex deep V neck men's shirt with a stand-out symmetrical back design in Orange Nylon/Spandex and Black Tech Mesh. On the back of the garment is a custom embroidered Netherland Flag in White, Black, Red, and Turquoise thread and custom Lotto Logo in Yellow, White, Silver, Black, and Gold Glimmer thread. Epke is wearing a pair of matching Orange Nylon/Spandex special order Men's Gymnastics Competition Pants 1846M which feature a comfortable, yet secure, waistband and foot stirrups.

Congratulations to Epke, from all of us here at GK!

GK Visits Wendy Hillard Foundation in NYC

GK recently traveled to New York City to visit the Wendy Hillard Foundation, and we are so excited to share our commitment to the sport of gymnastics with others. We admire and support this organization whose mission is to provide opportunities to improve physical and emotional health through gymnastics and its associated disciplines.  Founded in 1996 by Wendy Hilliard, Hall of Fame rhythmic gymnasts- the Wendy Hilliard Foundation has provided free gymnastics classes, summer programs, competitive gymnastics teams and annual girls and women sports clinics. Initial funding was through the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and the US Olympic Committee. Current funding includes; public funding, private and corporate grants and individual donors.

Located in Harlem, NYC the Wendy Hilliard Foundation has served over 15,000 inner city youth. This unique development organization has trained elite level athletes as well as national and international event champions.   Wendy’s Broadway background has served beneficially for the organization’s performance training, with many trained athletes going onto Broadway and other national and international performances. Wendy was featured in People Magazine and the New York Times, highlighting this non-profit organization. She continues to make partnerships with youth serving organizations such as the Dance Theater of Harlem and the Police Athletic League. Since 2010, the WHF began a partnership with the Harlem Children’s Zone “HCZ”. This partnership provides free gymnastics for over 350 HCZ students each week. The HCZ Armory is the home of the WHF competitive teams which includes over 30 HCZ students. HCZ through the WHF also provides free Parent and me and adult gymnastics classes for the community. She now has added focus in health, nutrition, pregnancy prevention and sports medicine partnering with the NYC top hospitals the Women’s Sports Medicine Center and Premier Physical Therapy and Wellness. In 2004 the organization added programs aimed at reinforcing literacy, dedication to school work and health through Literacy Inc.

Wendy Hillard was the first African-American to represent the U.S. in rhythmic gymnastics, Her main goal was to create a program that provided an opportunity for more minorities to experience the sport she was so passionate about. The Wendy Hilliard Foundation has established an incredible track record of providing quality training for people of all ages and abilities in gymnastics. Hillard's nine time national team membership was a record breaker as she served twice as the National Team Captain. Later she became the US National Team Coach and went on to train 1996 Olympian, Aliane Baquerot.  In 2008 she was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Wendy is pictured on the left with our Executive Vice President of Design & Corporate Relations, Kelly McKeown. Featured below are photos of Estella competing in her GK leotard from the Moscow Olympics in 1980 and a photo of her GK leo that still fits!

Estela brightens any room she walks into and we were happy to catch up with her recently. Enjoy our conversation with her below.

GK - You have been passionate about the sport of gymnastics for most of your life. How can you describe your journey in this sport and what have you learned from it?

Estela - I started gymnastics when I was 6 years old. I was very very active and never stopped doing gymnastics all over my house. My Father Carlos, my Mother Estela and my Brothers: Carlos, Federico, Monica, Mario Ana Mary support me all the time to be the best gymnast and diver in México and compete all over the world representing my country. During the Olympics in Montreal 1976 I saw Nadia Comaneci competing on TV  and she inspired me to be like her and I dreamdt of meeting her one day.  When I started gymnastics, I competed in The Junior Club until I started training in the Mexican Olympic Center. I competed from México in Pan Am Games in Puerto Rico 1979 winning the Team Bronze Medal. Then I competed in the World Championship in Forth Worth in 1979, where I was the only Mexican Gymnast qualified for the Olympics in Moscu 1980. Before the Olympics in Moscú, I competed in The Pan Pacific in Hawaii, Edmonton and Seattle. After that I competed in the American Cup in the Madison Square Garden. Also some other competitions I participated in were in the Moscú News, Budapest and Riga Cup. At 15 years old, the year of 1980 in Mosco, I had one of my best experiences of my life. My best memory was my leotard from GK because I competed with the same leotard I used in the World Championship in Forth Word, Texas. I did my best competition and my dream came true! i Competed in the Olympics beside Nadia Comaneci. Wahooo!!! This was an amazing and unforgettable experience. In this Olympics, I was surprised because I competed in the All Around Finals making history in Mexico, to be until this year the only Mexican Gymnast in the History competing in the All Around Finals. Finally when I retired from gymnastics I started diving in the Mexican Olympic Center. When I first began I went to the Centroamerican Games winning 3 gold medals in Santo Domingo, Republica Domenicana. After this I competed in Pan Am Games in Venezuela where I finished in 4th place on 10 mts platform. Then went to compete to Russia, Fina Cup in Shangai-China, Germany, Sweden,Austria and Italy making finals in 10mts Platform. My best result in diving was 8th place in the World Diving Championship in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

GK - What are some of the major obstacles you had to overcome through your gymnastics career?

Estela - My injuries. I overcame these obstacles by going to the gym in the Olympic Center, instead of staying in my house. My home was and still is the Mexican Olympic Center in México, City.

GK - Why do you love GK gymnastics apparel?
Estela - I love GK gymnastics apparel because as a gymnast the only thing I buy when I travel were all colors and shapes of leotards all over the world and the best are GK styles. I have a massive collection of GK competition leos, and still have my BEST GK leotard, the one that I competed in the World Championship and Olympic Games. I Love it !!!

GK - What advice would you give to aspiring gymnasts based on your experiences?
Estela - My best advice for all boy and girl gymnasts is that they have to enjoy this beautiful sport and make their dreams come true. Also never give up. With hard work, discipline and tenacity you will make your goals come true. GO FOR THEM!

GK - Describe how you have remained focused on your career through the years.

Estela - I am very proud to have the best family with me all the time, also I am very happy for having been a gymnast and a diver representing Mexico all over the world. I am also very proud to have covered 6 Olympic Games on Mexican TV as a Commentator of Artistic Gymnastic, Rythmic Gymnastic, Diving and Synchronized Swimming in Seúl-1988, Barcelona-1992, Atlanta-1996, Sidney-2000, Athens-2004, Beijing-2008 and London-2012. I am still a TV Commentator in Televisa Deportes Network.

GK - What are your plans for the future in the gymnastics industry?

Estela - Now I am currently the General Director of the Mexican Open in Acapulco along with Grupo Pegaso. I am on the Board of IGHOF, which has been a wonderful experience. Working with some of my favorite people including Paul Ziert, Bart Conner, Michael Wilson and all of the Team US Boarders in this IGHOF. My plans for the future in gymnastics industry is to help and improve this brilliant sport in the world. I would love to have my very own exclusive gymnastics designs with GK!

Catching Up with Kyla After 2013 World Gymnastics Championships

GK was thrilled to be a part of the 2013 World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium. Our retail store was a huge success providing lots of traffic and customer interaction. We love that we could enjoy chatting with the world's most elite gymnasts, and also share the latest styles in gymnastics apparel. We are please to have recently caught up with Kyla Ross after Worlds. Here is what she has to say about her experience in Belgium...

Kyla earned the silver medal behind Simone Biles in the All-Around Finals. Additionally she earned second place on the uneven bars, and placed fifth on the floor exercise. - See more at: http://blog.gkelite.com/blog/choice-of-champions-gymnastics-blog/kyla-ross-in-stunning-gk-leo-at-worlds#sthash.AZLcBfBB.dpuf

GK - We are so proud of your accomplishments and you must be too! You have recently placed 2nd in the All-Around, Balance Beam, Uneven Bars and 5th in the Floor Exercise at Worlds. How do you feel about your performances?

Overall I was happy with the way that I performed and was able to hit all my routines consistently.  I was also really honored to get the Longines Elegance award.  That was a pleasant surprise!

GK - Did you debut any new skills you are most proud of this year? If so, do you feel you have mastered these new skills and what are some you are still working on mastering?

I have been training new skills but at Worlds I didn't compete any new upgrades.  Now that I have had some down time to work on new tricks, hopefully I will be able to incorporate them in my upcoming competitions.  I have been working on a back handspring Arabian on beam.

GK - What type of advice do your coaches provide to you before a major championship such as this?

My coach Jenny knows me very well and is great at getting me mentally prepared to compete and focus on hitting my routines in high pressure situations.  She is encouraging and makes sure that I am constantly visualizing my routines prior to getting up on the apparatus.  I have been competing with her for many years now and she takes every competition very seriously.  She knows how to motivate me to keep fighting till the end of the competition.

GK - What was your favorite part of traveling to Belgium for this year’s World Artistic Championships?

I love Europe.  The town of Antwerp was so cute.  I loved all the cafes and shops.  There were also many beautiful historical building and sculptures that were fun to see.

GK - Which men's event would you enjoy if it was allowed and why?

I love watching men's high bar.  The skills that they do look so unreal it's amazing.  It would be my coaches dream for me to do some of the men's skills!  Everything they do is so difficult but maybe someday I will be able to pull one of their tricks off!

GK - What was your favorite event at Worlds this year and for what reason?

I would probably say beam.  I felt very confident and hit my routines on all three days that I had to compete beam.  I felt like this was a big accomplishment because your nerves can really get the best of you on beam.  I was able to get past that and just enjoy being on the world stage.

GK - Now that World’s is over, what are your plans? Do you plan on relaxing or vacationing at all?

My Aunt has been wanting to take me on a spa retreat weekend for awhile now.  I finally just got to go and I had a blast in Vegas.  We went to several amazing restaurants, Nobu and Serendipity to name a few. I experienced a spa day and saw the "O" show which was incredible.  I also went on a little shopping spree too!
