Universal Sports debuts ‘Around the Gym’ presented by AT&T’

Universal Sports will  pre- and post-competition shows called Around the Gym, presented by AT&T, which will be hosted by 2008 Olympic gold-medalist Nastia Liukin and three-time Olympian John Roethlisberger. UniversalSports.com will provide free, live simulstreams of the TV broadcasts and coverage of Universal Sports’ Around the Gym. In addition, the site will have extensive competition highlights, photos, news and blogs, plus athlete interviews and other behind-the-scenes content.

Around the Gym will provide an inside look at the competition, featuring interviews, commentary and analysis both before and after the daily events. The 30-minute shows will air LIVE starting Thursday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. ET, prior to the first Universal Sports Network coverage, and immediately following coverage at 9:00 p.m. ET. On Friday, August 13, Around the Gym will start pre-competition coverage at 6:30 p.m. ET and post-competition at 10 p.m. ET. Universal Sports will also broadcast the show following NBC’s coverage of the women’s final day of competition on Saturday, August 14. The Visa Championships determine the U.S. champions and the national team for both the junior and senior elite levels in men’s and women’s gymnastics.

Olympic Heroes Tour from August 2nd – 13th, 2010. 


The goodwill military tour features gold medalists from the Olympic Games.  These outstanding Olympic athletes will have a tremendous impact on the military personnel stationed in Iraq.  All of the participants have expressed their passion for our troops overseas.  The group visiting the troops includes:
 
Paul Hamm is a World Gymnastics Champion and three-time Olympic medalist. He first competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he finished 5th in the team event and 14th in the individual all-around competition. By the time the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens came around, he had already become the first American man to win the all-around title at the World Championships.  He was part of the United States men’s gymnastics  team who won the silver medal in the team events, and then, in come from behind fashion, won the gold in the individual all-around competition by .012 points, the closest in Olympic gymnastics history. Paul became the only American man in Olympic gymnastic history to receive a gold medal
 
Allen Johnson is a track athlete as a hurdler.

Carly Piper competed in the 2004 Summer Olympic games in Athens, Greece, where she won gold in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay with fellow teammates Natalie Coughlin, Kaitlin Sandeno, and Dana Vollmer.

Moushaumi Robinson had the best performance of her life at the most opportune time when she placed sixth in the women’s 400 meters (51.54) at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento.
 
The group are visiting numerous bases throughout Iraq as well as Kuwait.  They will be spending most of their time with soldiers from the Army, but will also be visiting servicemen and women in the Marines and Air Force.

David Michaels, Executive Producer of Universal Sports, will be directing the production, which will feature commentators Tim Daggett, 1984 Mens gymnastics Olympic Gold Medalist, and Tasha Schwikert, 2000 Olympic Bronze Medalist. In her first competitive appearance since announcing a year ago that she was coming out of retirement, Sacramone will look to perform well, just three week away from the 2010 Visa Championships. The competition will be fierce as the reigning world champion, Bridget Sloan, and world silver-medalist, Rebecca Bross, both of whom have already qualified for nationals, will be sure to bring their best in hopes of perfecting their routines for nationals. 

The CoverGirl Classic, formerly known as the U.S. Classic, is the final qualifying event for the 2010 Visa Championships, the U.S. National Gymnastics Championships for men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline and tumbling. Universal Sports will broadcast the 2010 Visa Championships live on Thursday, August 12 and Friday, August 13 at 7 p.m. ET, while NBC Sports will show live coverage on Saturday, August 14 at 8 p.m. ET and taped coverage on Sunday, August 15 at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Gymnastics fans don't need to be in Worcester, Mass. this weekend to witness some of the world's top gymnasts and rising stars. All you need is a TV and computer tuned to Universal Sports for LIVE coverage of the 2010 Tyson American Cup.

Our coverage kicks off on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET with the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup, a new all-around competition that will feature 36 of the country's up-and-coming young female gymnasts. GK is the apparel sponsor for this gymnastics event.

January marks the beginning of the 2010 Gymnastics season


The start of the New Year marks the beginning of the competitive gymnastics season, including all levels of gymnastics – from Junior Olympics to collegiate to elite. Thousands of gymnasts across the nation are competing in invitationals and other events that serve as the first steps in the championships journey.

“In January, the gymnastics competitive season kicks into high gear,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “Gymnastics clubs are competing in events every weekend from now through July; collegiate gymnastics is in full swing and culminates with the championships in April; and our elite gymnasts begin competing in a variety of domestic and international events. We sanction about 3,500 events annually, and many of these will be held in the coming months.”

Gymnastics includes competition in men’s, women’s, rhythmic, acrobatic and group gymnastics, and trampoline and tumbling. Because the complete calendar is extensive, here are some of the key events scheduled for the coming months. Dutch Gymnast Epke Zonderland has been chosen for Dutch Sportsman of the year 2009-12-16. He won this year the Mens Gymnastics overall Worldcup and placed second on highbar during the Gymnastics World championship in London.

AMSTERDAM - Ja hoor, hij heeft het felbegeerde beeldje van Jaap Eden ook in zijn prijzenkast nu. Epke Zonderland is dinsdag 15 december 2009 in Amsterdam gekozen tot Sportman van het jaar 2009. Sommigen noemen het verrassend, anderen vinden het niet meer dan vanzelfsprekend en verdiend. De 23-jarige Fries veroverde op indrukwekkende wijze zilver op het onderdeel rekstok bij het wereldkampioenschap turnen in Londen. Ook won Zonderland voor de tweede maal op rij de wereldbeker op hetzelfde toestel. Verder won hij heel wat kleuren medailles bij wereldbekerwedstrijden afgelopen jaar. Na een ‘teleurstellende’ 5e plaats in de rekstokfinale van het EK 2009 in Milaan, wist hij bijna alle andere internationale finaleplaatsen te verzilveren.

Zonderland kreeg de voorkeur boven schaatser Sven Kramer en dressuurruiter Edward Gal. Zonderland is de opvolger van de inmiddels gestopte zwemmer Maarten van der Weijden. De ‘kleine beer van Lemmer’, die vroeger plaatsgenoot en schaatser Rintje Ritsma (de ‘grote beer van Lemmer’) als idool had, was dolgelukkig met zijn uitverkiezing. De wereldkampioen van 2005 op ringen, Yuri van Gelder, is de andere turner in de moderne geschiedenis die de Jaap Eden won (2005).

Epke betrok in zijn moment van glorie ook de mensen die hem hebben gesteund om de beste Nederlandse sportman van dit jaar te worden: „Het is helemaal fantastisch als je door collega-sporters wordt gekozen. Het voelt echter als de honneurs waarnemen voor een heel team dat achter je staat.” Een fantastische opsteker voor Epke persoonlijk, maar uiteraard voor de hele gymsportwereld in Nederland, zeker op de drempel van het nieuwe jaar: op weg naar òns WK turnen 2010 in Ahoy Rotterdam… Epke zegt dat hij het halen van goud voor alsdan heeft bewaard, voor eigen publiek en in eigen land ;-)
