What is this special event - the day after Thanksgiving?

B"lack Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, which is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. The term dates back to at least 1966, although its usage was primarily on the East coast. The term has become more common in other parts of the country since 2000. Because Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, Black Friday occurs between the 22nd and the 29th of November.

Retailers often decorate for the Christmas and holiday season weeks beforehand. Many retailers open extremely early, with most of the retailers typically opening at 5AM or even earlier. Some of the larger retailers (depending on the location) such as Sears, Best Buy, Macy's, Toys "R" Us, and Walmart have been reported to open as early as midnight on the start of Black Friday in localized areas and remain open for 24 hours throughout the day until midnight the following Saturday. Upon opening, retailers offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to draw people to their stores. Although Black Friday, as the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season at least since the start of the modern Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the term "Black Friday" has been traced back only to the 1960s.

The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that. More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red (i.e., posting a loss on the books) to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).

Its Time to Unwrap Our Newest Environmental Initiative

Like many environmentally-conscious companies, we're always looking for ways to "Go Green." As a result, we're beginning to phase out the automatic use of polybags on all GK Stock garments. In addition to being environmentally friendly, this was also a suggestion to us from some of our Gyms, who commented on all the bags they had to throw out when they received a stocking orders when they displayed the leotards on racks.

Up until this summer, every Leotard, Gymnastics Short, pant, warm ups suit, etc, was stored in our warehouse and shipped with a polybag - You know, one of those bags you get from the dry cleaners. They are great for keeping the dust off of clothing, but what do you do with them when you want to wear the leo?  Mostly it is in the trash.

To Bag or Not to Bag?

DUST - One of the first questions we had to ask was about how necessary the bags were. Were we concerned about dust settling on the leotards in our warehouse? We reviewed our warehouse to see if there was a dust problems. We were pleasantly surprised to not see dust as one would expect. But that was not enough. If we would have garments without bags in our warehouse, we had to be sure they were protected. So we created plastic sheeting enclosures and increased air circulation in the warehouse.

CHALK DUST - Though there is no Chalk dust in our warehouse, you can bet that there is chalk dust  in many of the gyms that carry our leotards. For these gyms, we are offering the option of continuing to use the polybags.

SPECIAL ORDER LEOTARDS AND WARM UPS - We will continue to polybag all of our Special Order competitive leotards and Apparel.

IN STOCK COMPETITIVE APPAREL -

All Seasonal Essentials Leotards - We will no longer send Seasonal Leotards with Polybags. That means apparel from our Summer, Summer Camp, Back to School , Valentines, Fall and Holiday catalogs will not come in polybags. GYMS WITH CHALK ISSUES need not worry. You can order your leos in bags if needed.

A Simple Step

After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Gymnastics All Around Gold medalist Nastia Liukin was honored when she was featured on the front of Wheaties Cereal box.  If you missed it in the stores last year, you missed a true testament to this American Gymnastics hero.

In addition to the beautiful shot of Nastia flying above the balance beam – in an adidas leotard of course – Wheaties featured a biopic testimonial to Nastia. It is reproduced below.


It’s a long way from Russia to Texas, but from an early age, Nastia Liukin learned a language common to both locales: that of gymnastics. Born in Moscow, Liukin moved to the United States with her parents at the age of two. Her parents, both renown gymnasts from their competitive days, began bringing her to the gym.

Whether spurred by genetics or the spirit of competition, the pull of gymnastics was too strong for the young Liukin to resist.  She became an Elite gymnast by the age of 12 and burst onto the National scene at the 2002 US Classic, winning the All-Around bronze medal and a silver on the balance beam. As a junior, Liukin was named U.S. National Champion twice and went unbeaten for two straight years. She went on to win her third consecutive title in 2005 (her first as a senior).

Although her 2006 season was marred by a serious ankle injury. Liukin battled back through intensive rehabilitation with an eye toward 2008.

Tall for her sport, this 18 year old stood head and shoulders above her competition atop the stand in Beijing. Wheaties salutes Nastia Liukin, American Hero and a true Wheaties Champion.
