As part of its ongoing support of the sport of gymnastics, GK supplied the participants of USA Gymnastics T&T JumpStart program with gymnastics apparel for their January 12-13th camp at the Karolyi Ranch in Huntsville, Texas.  The JumpStart Program "identifies future elite athletes at a young age and educates their coaches on proper fitness and skill development. GK was happy to host some very elite gymnasts for a recent competitive catalog photo shoot.  Brenna Dowell, Sarah Finnegan, and Sabrina Vega of Great American Gymnastics Express (GAGE), Blue Springs, Missouri, were all here and we had a great time!  Shortly after, our models sent us a photograph sporting GymTek leotards so we asked them what they thought about the GymTek line.

USA Gymnastics' Trampoline and Tumbling (T&T) Olympic Development Program (ODP) is a bridge between the Junior Olympic and Junior Elite levels. The program provides a training camp, coaches' education, and an ODP team named based on ranking from the ODP Divisions at three competitions. At their recent International Exchange Camp, the athletes trained in IN STOCK women's gymnastics leotards and boy's gymnastics shirts and pants from GK.

The next couple of days will be a whirlwind for the gymnastics champions on the Kellogg's Tour.  Today, it's Kansas City, Missouri, then on to St. Louis, Missouri on Friday, October 19th, Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday, October 20th, and Lafayette, Louisiana on Sunday, October 21st.  They sure look like they are having a lot of fun though! Her mom, Jenifer, said, "We love GK for its fit and quality.  Can't wait till she's big enough to compete!!"

Kyla Ross won 4th place for the All-Around at the Visa Championships - the next to the last stop on the road to London 2012. She also placed 2nd on Uneven Bars, 4th on Beam, and 6th on Floor.  15-year-old Kyla lives in Aliso Viejo, California and trains at Gym-Max Gymnastics under head coach Jenny Zhang.  Her foray into the sport began in 1999 when her mom enrolled her in a gymnastics class to harness all of her energy.  Kyla's current goal is to secure one of the 5 spots on the the 2012 Olympic Team.  Her dream may come true in just days. In the meantime, GK got to learn a little more about Kyla so we wanted to share with our friends and fans. 

GK:  When did you start in gymnastics?

Kyla: I have been doing gymnastics since I was 3 years old.

GK:  So, are you training for anything in particular right now?  : )

Kyla:  The Olympic Trials! 

GK:  What’s your training schedule like currently?

Kyla:  I train 6 days a week for about 32 hours a week.

GK:  There has been so much speculation about the coveted “five spots” for the Olympic Team and the need for strong all-arounders versus event specialists.  Where do you think you fit in and what do you have to offer the team if chosen? 

Kyla: I have won several AA titles in my gymnastic career so, I would like to think that I could contribute to the team in that same fashion.  Recently, my strongest events have been beam and bars, which I think are very important contributions to the team.

GK:  You have a considerable amount of international experience – does it give you an advantage in competition? 

Kyla: I have a lot of international experience.  Prior to this year, I had been on the Junior National Team since 2009.  As a junior, I went on practically every international assignment that the USA competed in.  I became a senior this past January and I have already done 2 international assignments. I feel that it is definitely an advantage because the international conditions can be so different from what we are used to here in the states.  This goes for everything…weather, food, time zone, equipment, etc.  The more experience you have, the easier it becomes to adapt to anywhere you go.

GK:  What is your favorite event and why?

Kyla:  Beam!  I have always loved beam because I feel it is extremely challenging every time you get on it.  I also find that it showcases the most grace and perfection with every move you make.

GK:  What is your coach reminding you of constantly?

Kyla:  During my competitions my coach is always reminding me to visualize in my head my routine for my next event.

GK:  What’s on your iPod?

Kyla: One Direction, Rhianna, Beyonce, P Diddy, and Justin Bieber are some of the artists I listen to.

GK: Do you have a favorite GK gymnastics leotard?

Kyla: The red, white, and blue Freedom Gymnastics Leotard I wore on day 2 of the 2012 Visa Championships.

GK: How did you like modeling gymnastics leotards for the 2012-2013 GK Competitive Catalog?

Kyla: I had a lot of fun modeling and I enjoyed doing it with Aly Raisman.

GK: What did you think of the GK SWAROVSKI Couture Gymnastics Leotard?

Kyla: I thought it was very elegant and beautiful with all the crystal ELEMENTS on it.  I couldn’t believe how much it sparkled and how heavy it was!

GK: What do you do on your day off or down time – if you have any right now?

Kyla:  Whenever I have free time I like hanging out with my friends and family, go shopping, and I just started online classes to get my driver’s license!

GK: What are you most proud of so far in your gymnastics career?

Kyla: I’m proud that I have made it this far in gymnastics within such a short amount of time. I also feel very fortunate to compete for Team USA and have traveled to all the places I have been to.

Carly Patterson competed in the Athens Olympics in 2004 and became only the second American woman to capture Olympic Gold for the Individual All-Around.  Carly hit that pinnacle after a fast and furious gymnastics career with an impressive medal count at a young age.  Carly caught the gymnastics bug while attending a cousin’s birthday party at a local gym.  After literally bouncing around her home, her mother decided to enroll her in a gymnastics class.  Flash forward several years and Carly began training at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy with Evgeny Marchenko and Natasha Boyarskaya as her personal coaches.

Carly exhibited tremendous talent from a young age.  She made the Junior National Team at the age of 12.  Two years later, she won the Junior National All-Around title.  At the 2003 World Championships, Carly won Gold and Silver medals, respectively, in the Team and All-Around events and then tied for the All-Around title at the 2004 U.S. Nationals.  She reached the height of her career in 2004 winning Olympic Gold for Individual All‑Around.  Carly describes this as “one of the most amazing moments of my life!” 

Carly was best-known for her impressive beam repertoire, being the first to perform an Arabian double front dismount, now aptly named the “Patterson.”  She also had amazing floor and vault skills.  Carly took time off after the 2004 Games to heal a back injury she’d had throughout the competition, and announced her retirement from the sport shortly thereafter.  Carly was inducted into the Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Carly found inspiration for her 2012 GK Legends Collection Leotard in revisiting the culmination of her gymnastics career – the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.  Carly won the Individual All-Around Gold medal, making her only the second American woman to do so, 20 years after Mary Lou Retton first did in 1984.

According to Carly, “The Olympic rings wrapping around the leotard are an awesome representation of what I achieved in my gymnastics career.”  The foundation for Carly’s take on the rings is Silver Mystique and each ring is created with Ocean, Black, Red, Yellow and Kelly Green Mystiques.

Since her retirement, Carly made several talk show appearances, was featured on an NBC special, adorned the front of a Wheaties box, honored as the March of Dimes' “Sportswoman of the Year” in 2004, and named one of Teen People's “20 Teens Who Will Change the World” in 2005.  Currently, Carly attends the University of North Texas working towards her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications.  She is still very involved in gymnastic camps, speaking engagements and works with USA Gymnastics.

GK. Choice of Champions.

Logan C., 4 years old, is a GK Everyday Champion who has been taking gymnastics for a little over a year.  He is enrolled in KinderGym at Parkettes Gymnastics in Allentown, Pennsylvania.  Logan's favorite activities are the foam pit and trampoline.  He recently completed the Spring Session and was very proud of his medal and certificate.  Logan is also a GK model and can be seen in our GKids promotions.
