USA Gymnastics agrees to sanction NCATA events
09/02/2010

Sept. 2, 2010 – Earlier today, USA Gymnastics and the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association (NCATA), formerly known as the National Collegiate Stunts and Tumbling Association, announced that USA Gymnastics will sanction NACATA events. NCATA has the goal of establishing itself as a sport within the NCAA framework.

“This is a natural extension for USA Gymnastics to work with the NCATA,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “This sport combines many of the skills taught throughout gymnastics disciplines. Currently, six universities have teams in this sport, which creates a new path for young gymnasts who aspire to collegiate sports. This provides a natural pathway for USA Gymnastics athletes in the acrobatic and tumbling disciplines, along with gymnasts who have participated in artistic gymnastics, to the college level. This has the potential to grow into a much larger opportunity for gymnasts.”

“USA Gymnastics is an established and respected governing body,” said John Blake, NCATA executive director. “We have made great strides as an organization and this developing sport. This serves as yet another catalyst for our expansion at the NCAA level, and provides the NCATA with an established protocol that supports our growth.”

The collegiate association organizing team acrobatics and tumbling for women, NCATA’s goal is to reach NCAA emerging sport status. NCATA’s current member institutions – Azusa Pacific University, Baylor University, Fairmont State University, University of Maryland, University of Oregon and Quinnipiac University – are excited about the possibilities of this new alliance. NCATA athletes and coaches will become members of USA Gymnastics and adhere to the rules and policies of the organization. NCATA changed its name from the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association as part of its efforts to better align its activities with the gymnastics community.

“Many of our student-athletes come from the gymnastics community,” said Felecia Mulkey, head coach of the University of Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team. “This will be great for our development and the expansion of the sport at the collegiate level, creating new opportunities for female student-athletes.”

The all-female acrobatics and tumbling teams are recognized and treated as fully sponsored sports at their respective institutions and are in full compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. The teams range in size, with a maximum of 40 women. The purpose of an acrobatics and tumbling team is to represent a university six to eight times each season in a head-to-head competitive format against other collegiate acrobatics and tumbling teams. An NCATA meet includes six rounds – compulsory, stunt, pyramid, basket toss, tumbling and a team routine. The scoring system includes pre-determined start difficulty values for each skill in each round for consistent scoring by officials. The NCATA’s unique meet format with standardized scoring, officiating, and safety provide clear separation from other related sports or activities.

“We are taking a step-by-step approach to working with the NCATA,” said Penny, “and we believe that the growth potential for both USA Gymnastics and the NCATA is a win-win.”

Shawn Johnson Urges All to Drink Chocolate Milk!

USA’S TOP ATHLETES TEAM UP TO REFUEL AMERICA

Apolo Ohno and Chris Bosh Join All-Star Team of Elite Athletes to Urge Active Americans to Rethink Their Post-Exercise Recovery Drink and Choose Lowfat Chocolate Milk

NEW YORK (August 11, 2010) – One is known for icing the competition – the other heats up the basketball court. Although they’re from completely different ends of sporting spectrum, there’s one thing these world-class athletes both agree on, lowfat chocolate milk is a “natural” at helping them recover, refuel and replenish their bodies after strenuous exercise.

Shawn JohnsonEight-time speed skating medalist Apolo Anton Ohno and USA Basketball’s Chris Bosh are the latest celebrities to don a Milk Mustache and join some of America’s most-loved and top-performing athletes to announce a new campaign highlighting the importance of the two-hour recovery window after strenuous exercise. The “Refuel America” program aims to educate Americans that no matter what sport they play, lowfat chocolate milk is an easy, effective and cost-efficient way to refuel the body after a tough workout.

Many athletes think about what they consume before a workout, but those serious about performing at their best know refueling after exercise, especially during the two-hour recovery window, is key in helping the body recover and prepare for the next workout or competitionAnd, when it comes to exercise recovery beverages, lowfat chocolate milk could offer a post-exercise advantage. It includes the right mix of protein and carbohydrates to repair and refuel exhausted muscles, plus fluids and electrolytes to rehydrate and help replenish what’s lost in sweat. Plus, with nine essential nutrients, milk contains key vitamins and minerals your body needs every day – many not found in traditional sports drinks.

“The trainers, coaches and athletes that I work with agree that the two hours after exercise is a crucial part of training to help your body recover and refuel,” said speed skating superstar Apolo Ohno. “My races are often right after one another, so recovery is essential. I grab a lowfat chocolate milk to help me get fuel and nutrients back into my body quickly to help me recover for the next race.”

USA Basketball great Chris Bosh also is letting fans know that chocolate milk helps keep him at the top of his game. “Lowfat chocolate milk is an important part of my recovery plan – plus it tastes great,” he said. “It’s a main stay in our locker room and gaining popularity among my teammates.”

Joined by fellow Milk Mustache athletes and refuel with chocolate milk proponents, including olympic gymnastics gold medalist Shawn Johnson and WNBA star Crystal Langhorne, Ohno and Bosh today unveiled their Milk Mustache ads and the new Refuel America program. The campaign will reach Americans nationwide through a variety of initiatives throughout 2010 and 2011, including celebrity Milk Mustache print ads; television and online public service messages featuring athletes like Chris Bosh and Shawn Johnson; refueling athletes at select sporting events around the country; a virtual personal training program for teens; and grants to schools.

Your Workout’s Finished. Your Body Isn’t.

Chocolate milk is making star appearances in locker rooms around the country as more athletes and top level coaches discover the benefits of refueling with chocolate milk after training. Experts agree that the two-hour window after strenuous exercise is an important, yet often neglected, part of a fitness routine.  Active bodies need the right mix of nutrients and fluids to properly recover and get back in the game.

“What’s so great about lowfat chocolate milk is that it delivers the things the body really needs to recover – like carbs, high-quality protein, fluids and electrolytes – with the bonus of other nutrients like bone-strengthening vitamin D and calcium, all in a great-tasting, affordable drink that’s probably already in your refrigerator,” said nationally-recognized certified sports dietitian Tara Gidus, RD, who works with some of the nation’s top athletes.

A growing body of research supports chocolate milk’s recovery benefits. Most recently, a series of four studies presented at the American College of Sports Medicine suggests that drinking fat free chocolate milk after exercise can help the body retain, replenish and rebuild muscle to help your body recover and could even help prepare muscles to perform better in a subsequent bout of exercise. 1-4

Refuel with Chocolate Milk and Get Rewards

To educate teen athletes on the role of lowfat chocolate milk in refueling their bodies after strenuous exercise and reward them for choosing milk, teens can join the “Refuel & Reward” program which provides them with a “virtual personal trainer” via their mobile devices. By texting REFUEL to 80800, teens will receive tips from world-class athletes like Shawn Johnson, Apolo Ohno and Chris Bosh and opportunities to win cool prizes including autographed sports gear.

Schools: Rally for a Refuel Grant

The new program will provide school coaches with information and materials to help educate their teams about the benefits of post-exercise nutrition, including lowfat chocolate milk. Coaches, teachers, students and parents can nominate secondary schools that refuel their athletes with chocolate milk for a chance to receive one of ten $1,000 Refuel Grants to help them further efforts to teach the benefits of exercise and nutrition.

Shawn has worked closely with Zoo to provide incredibly realistic game play. By incorporating her gymnastics skills, consumers will be able to create an authentic gymnastics experience right from their very own living room.

“Shawn is one of the most decorated and gifted athletes in the world, and bringing her skill and knowledge of the sport to this title sets a new level of realism for video games,” said Mark Seremet, CEO of Zoo. “We are very fortunate to work with someone who is as dedicated to her craft as we are to ours, and the end result will reflect that dedication when the game hits store shelves this fall.”

Medaling in both gold and silver in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics, as well as receiving an ESPY and the prestigious James E. Sullivan award, Shawn Johnson is nothing short of an icon in the sport of gymnastics. In addition to her athletic achievements, she is a role model to girls around the world. “To work with an athlete of Shawn’s magnitude is an honor, and the fact that she remains humble through it all is a testament to her character,” said Seremet. “In addition to her obvious athletic contribution to the game, it is just as much her persona as it is her talent that will make this title extraordinarily fun and enjoyable for the whole family.”

Shawn Johnson Gymnastics is slated for a November 2010 retail release on Nintendo Wii and DS.
