As reported on “The Daily Collegian Online”. This past Saturday Penn State competed in a regional championship. They may not have hit all their routines but they are on their way to Lincoln, Nebraska for the national championship!
The team and individuals displayed true sportsmanship and a heart for gymnastics and pulled themselves up after some disappointing first two events.
Northeast Gymnast of the Year and the Nittany’s shining star, Brandi Personett, did her best considering a multitude of personal issue and placed in the top 10 in three events, including second place tie on the floor with former Gymnastic Olympic Champion Courtney Kupets, as well as placing second in the all-around, topped by Kupets.
As quoted by Personette: “I've learned how to handle multiple things at once," she said. "My dad would've wanted to be here so part of this was for him. He was here in spirit. A lot of this was for him on my part. Just knowing you can do it. All you training is for a reason. You don't have to be 100 percent the week of as long as you're there in the moment when the meet's happening."
The teams fellow all-arounder, Whitney Bencsko (freshman at PSU) had a rough start, but excelled in the teams second event. Where she flawlessly conquered the balance beam, even if not her dismount.
"I was so proud of her to turn it around," Shephard said. "I mean she could have just dug herself into a deep hole and not been able to dig herself out. When she came back on floor and vault the way she did that was tremendous. Even after falling on a dismount, but from that moment on she said, 'OK, I can't even think about it.' And that's hard to do. That's hard to do."
As quoted by Bencsko: "It's part of gymnastics, it happens," she said. "You're not always on, you're not always perfect. I know that the team needed me on the other two events, I'm one of the stronger tumblers, stronger vaulters they needed my score so I needed to turn it around and make it happen."
Even though the team struggled in the beginning. The true heart of the team came through for a victory for them….
"The heart of this team, you can't even describe it," Personett said. "Every girl was important in this meet. Every single girl, we needed them, and every girl went out there and did their best. We had some mistakes, but that just means that we wanted it that badly that sometimes your emotions get in the way but that's why we have every single person on this team to make up for when someone makes a mistake. The heart they showed throughout the meet was just incredible."
