At a recent photo shoot for the 2013 catalog featuring women's competitive gymnastics leotards, GK had the chance to sit & chat with Kyla Ross, member of the gold medal winning "Fierce Five" Women's Gymnastics Team.

GK: Congrats on bringing home Gold for Team USA!  What was it like to represent Team USA in London?

Kyla: Getting to go out there and compete, not only for yourself, but for Team USA, was such an honor, knowing that everyone is supporting you.  We didn’t even realize until we got home how many people were watching the Olympics, supporting us, and cheering us on.  It was a huge deal.

GK: How has your life changed now that you’re an Olympian?

Kyla: The first few months when I got back were kind of hectic.  We were doing so much and going so many places.  But now, it’s kind of cooled down and I’ve been back to school and back in the gym training.

GK: You’ve had so many great experiences since London, what was your most memorable?

Kyla: Definitely, meeting President Obama was a huge honor!  It was amazing to be in the oval office and see everything and to be able to meet the President.

GK: Now that the Olympics are over, what are you focused on?

Kyla: I am focused on training and I’m looking forward to competing this season and hopefully bringing something new to the table. 

GK: So, do you plan to compete next season at Championships?

Kyla: Yes, I’m planning on competing in championships and getting out there with everyone else, enjoy it, and do my best.

GK: What advice would you give to your fans?

Kyla: To all my fans, I would say to reach your goals, you always have to focus and do your best.  Some days might be tough, but you just have to keep training hard in the gym and be dedicated to your sport.

Soon after the announcement of Gabrielle Douglas as the latest GK Champion, work began on her first collection of gymnastics leotards culminating in a photo shoot for the upcoming Spring 2013 Workout Essentials catalog.  In between shots, GK had a chance to chat with the 2 time Gold Medalist. 

GK:  How does it feel to have a collection of GK gymnastics leotards with your name on them?

Gabrielle:  It just feels amazing to have my own line! I’m so excited for it to come out, I’m even going to buy my own line.  It’s just very exciting.

GK:  What are your favorite features of your Spring collection of GK gymnastics leotards?

Gabrielle: I love my spring leotard collection because everything is really comfortable.  I know that when I work out, I always want to be comfortable.  The fabrics are not only comfortable, but cute too.  There is one I love called “slither,” kind of like an animal print.  I just hope you guys love it.

GK:  Is leotard design something you’ve always wanted to do?

Gabrielle:  I’ve always loved designing my own leotards.  I remember designing leotards for Classic's or Visa’s and throwing different colors in and a whole lot of bling in.  I’ve always dreamed about designing my own leotard line. 

GK:  What is your inspiration for your leotard designs?

Gabrielle: My inspiration comes from cool designs, the idea of comfortable leos, just crazy colors, crazy rhinestones, just a mix of it all.

GK:  Is there anything you’d like to say to the young gymnasts who will be buying your leotard collection?

Gabrielle:  Yes, I would just say I hope you guys love my GK gymnastics leotards.  I hope you succeed in all that you do in this sport.  Never quit, never give up, always have fun, and love the sport!

GK had the pleasure of hosting another photo shoot with Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman, this time for her Spring 2012 Signature Collection.  We have to keep her latest gymnastics leotard designs under wraps for now, but Aly did take the time to answer some questions for our GK family, friends, and fans. 

GK: How do you like having your own Signature Collection of GK leotards?

Aly: Having my own leotard line for GK is a dream come true.  It’s so exciting.  It was amazing just last night when I went to the gym and saw little girls wearing my leotards.

GK: What kind of feedback have you been getting about your GK leotard line? 

Aly: So far, I’ve been getting really good feedback which means a lot to me.  When I was training seven hours a day it was really important for me to have comfortable leotards. The girls at the gym last night said my leotards are really comfortable, so I was happy to hear that.

GK: Was designing leotards something you wanted to do even before partnering with GK?

Aly: Designing leotards has always been a goal of mine. I’m very into fashion so I really wanted to have my own leotard line.  It’s just really exciting, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

GK: Do you find yourself taking mental notes or jotting down ideas for future leotard designs?

Aly: Yes, I’m always thinking ahead.  Last night I was asking the little girls at the gym what kind of leotards they like to wear and I told them that they could help me design some of the next ones.  They said they really love bright colors like pinks and lime greens and blues, so I will definitely keep that in mind. 

GK: Where does your design inspiration come from?

Aly: My design inspiration comes from things that I like to wear. I like to be different, but I like a simple look, but sometimes with a lot of jewels. Going to the gym and seeing a fun, bright leotard always makes me happy. 

GK: GK is the official apparel sponsor of the Kellogg’s Tour – do you have a favorite GK costume on the Kellogg’s Tour?

Aly:  My favorite GK costume is definitely the beam costume.  It’s a white, one shoulder leotard and has a lot of crystals on it.  It’s supposed to look like an angel.  It’s really different.  It has a little mesh skirt and a mesh wing and it’s a very elegant piece to wear with the rest of the girls. 

GK: Where do you keep your Olympic medals?

Aly: My Olympic medals are in a safe!

GK: Did you have a favorite Olympic leotard?

Aly: My favorite Olympic leotard was definitely the Stars & Stripes one that I wore for floor finals.  I loved the patriotic look and winning that particular medal made it even more of a favorite.  I loved all of the leotards.  They were all so beautiful.  My other favorites were the Purple Starburst one we wore the first day and then the team finals Chrysler Leotard.

GK: How many leotards do you think you own?

Aly: I was actually just thinking about that!  I think that I probably own, close to … somewhere between 50-75. 

GK: How did you like being a Halloween Costume choice this year?

Aly: Being a Halloween Costume choice was definitely cool.  People were tweeting pictures of their Fierce Five costumes to me and the rest of the girls.  It was inspiring to see so many people dressed up as us. 

GK:  Anything you’d like to say to the girls who will be buying and wearing your GK

Aly: I hope all the girls love my Signature Line as much as I do.  I hope they find them really comfortable.  And, I just want to thank them all for wearing my GK gymnastics leotards.

GK Congratulates Aly Raisman on earning her spot on the 2012 Women's Gymnastics Olympic Team!  The Olympic Trials were so exciting!  GK recently spoke to Aly at a GK photo shoot about going professional and her training schedule.  We also asked Aly about what it's been like as a GK endorsed athlete so far.  Here is what she shared with us about GK.

GK:  What do you like about GK gymnastics leotards?  Do you have a favorite that you wear time and again to the gym?

Aly:  I have so many GK leotards, I love them. They are so comfortable. Personally, my favorites are the spandex material gymnastic leotards. I am at the gym for hours. I’ve got to be comfortable while training! I am very into the summer leotards, the bright pinks and blues, so cute!

GK:  What was it like to be a part of the 2012-2013 Women’s Competitive Catalog shoot?

Aly:  Doing the GK photo shoot was so much fun! I love to do shoots because you can be dramatic, smiley, or anything, it's up to you. It's almost like you are an actress playing a part, it's really cool. Trying on all the gymnastics leotards and getting my hair and make up done, was like playing dress up, so fun!

GK:  How did you like modeling the GK SWAROVSKI COUTURE leotard?

Aly:  Modeling the GK SWAROVSKI leotard was such an honor, the leotard is so beautiful. I loved it so much that when I had a chance to design a leotard for the Visa Championships I based it on the couture leotard. I had to change it because it would have been way too heavy! I never had worn a white leo before, but modeling the couture leotard made me realize how beautiful white can be and how much it pops on the floor!

GK:  Anything else you’d like to say to your fans and GK fans?

Aly:  I am so honored and so thrilled to be able to be a part of the GK family. GK is such a fantastic company, they have the best gymnastic leotards!

Everyday Champion Erin M. trains at San Mateo Gymnastics in Belmont, California.  She was the JO National Champion on beam in 2012 in JR C.  Erin is currently a Level 10 gymnast, but her dream is to qualify as an Elite. 

Erin M. said, "I needed a gymnastics leotard for the Elite Qualifier at the Gliders Invitational this past February in Ontario, California.  I chose GK because they are the best in style, fit, design, and quality. I chose this particular style for its simplicity and elegance.  I worked with Holly Thomas, our GK Sales Representative, and my coaches Oksana Bystrova and Armen Astoian to get the perfect design and colors.  Holly showed me all the colors and how they would look together.  Oksana and Armen helped me pick the Swarovski crystals and where to place them to get the best effect.  It was a team effort to get the perfect gymnastics leotard.  When we received the finished leotard from GK, it was everything I thought it would be! The crystals sparkled with such brilliance and it shined from all directions in the light.  It is my favorite GK gymnastics leotard because of its sophistication and elegance."

The athletes from Texas Dreams Gymnastics were led to the Secret Classic by their coach, the legendary Kim Zmeskal-Burdette, owner and coach of Texas Dreams, and also one of GK's iconic designers for our Gymnastics Legends Special Edition catalog.  The Texas Dreams captured an impressive array of titles from the Secret Classic including Third All Around for Kennedy Baker.  The Juniors had much success with Bailie Key, Peyton Ernst, Ariana Guerra, and Veronica Hults taking 5th through 8th place in the Junior All Around.  It was a sea of GK blues at the podium!

GK: What surprised you the most?

Lexie:  How many people work here and how they all have to work together.

Rachael:  It surprised me how many little steps there are and how many pieces, how things are glued down before they are sewn and all of the detail work.

GK:  What did you learn about GK? 

Lexie: I could not believe it when I saw how each little piece has to be glued down, that was my favorite part!  I learned how everyone has to sew all these little pieces together.  It’s a lot of work to make just one leo.

Rachael:  I learned that there is always so much going on here.  There are the catalog leos and special order leos.  It’s like a project that is never quite done.

GK: A couple of questions for you, Lexie... How old were you when you started gymnastics?

Lexie: I was 4½, almost five. 

GK: How did you get started in gymnastics?

Lexie: My older sister did gymnastics and my twin sister, Leah, and I would always watch her.  So, my mom just put us in not thinking I would go this far, I guess.

GK: How long have you been training?

Lexie: For about 9 years.

GK:  How long have you been an Elite gymnast?

Lexie: About 2 ½ to 3 years.

GK: What is your training schedule like?

Lexie: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 8:30 to 12:30 and then 2:00 to 4:00.  Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 to 1:30 and then Saturdays 8:30 to about 1:30.

GK: Do you hope to make the 2016 Olympic team?

Lexie: Yes, that’s definitely my goal and hopefully it will happen!

GK: What do you like to do outside of the gym?

Lexie: I like to go to football games and Amelia (Hundley - also of Cincinnati Gymnastics and National Team member) and I hang out a lot and go to the movies.

The 2011 Legendz Classic, featured in the annual Kim Zmeskal Texas Prime Gymnastics Meet, is an exclusive meet for the top 15 Level 9/10’s. These gymnasts are each placed on one of three teams, captained by Olympic and World medal gymnasts. This 2-hour event of non-stop gymnastics features great music, interviews with the legendary Team Captains, and an autograph session afterwards. This year, the gymnastic team captains consisted of 1996 Olympic gymnast John Macready, 2004 Olympic silver-medalists Mohini Bhardwaj & 2004 Summer Olympics women's artistic gymnastic team member Courtney McCool. Although they were all eager to earn the title of Legendz Classic Champion, only one could be awarded and this year the title went to John Macready and his team.
