New York City Played Host to Liukin for first JCPenney Tour Stop to Celebrate Girl Empowerment, Individuality and the Supergirl in All Young Girls

BURBANK, Calif., — July 26, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), on behalf of DC Comics, JCPenney and five-time Olympic Medalist and World Champion Nastia Liukin, joined forces in New York City this past Saturday to debut an all new collection of clothing for girls called Supergirl by Nastia. The event is part of a five-market tour, visiting JCPenney stores around the country. As part of the tour, Nastia is providing young girls motivational advice on achieving their goals, feeling confident and being smart, strong and empowered—being a Supergirl. Liukin also introduced the new fun, affordable lifestyle collection, which is available exclusively at JCPenney stores nationwide.
 
Liukin was on hand to host the action-packed, kick-off event at New York’s Greeley Square Park in front of JCPenney, which featured live gymnastic exhibitions, dance performances, fashion presentations and even onsite stretching and tumbling classes for young girls. Nastia also hosted a meet and greet for attendees and prizes were awarded to lucky winners throughout the event.

“The New York kick-off event was such an incredible way to introduce Supergirl by Nastia to young girls and help communicate a message of empowerment,” said Liukin. “It was so much fun to interact with all of the girls and I am thrilled to be able to continue hosting the remaining events all across the country!”

Following Saturday’s debut in New York City, the tour is set to make additional stops in Dallas, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; and Orlando, Florida. Joining in all markets will be kids from JCPenney’s Afterschool Fund and other local community groups who will enjoy an empowering message from Nastia, as well as the opportunity for prizes, including a shopping spree for back-to-school clothes, courtesy of JCPenney.

The Supergirl by Nastia collection features trend-right, affordable apparel that encourages a message of empowerment, creativity, strength, intelligence and independence—the symbolic attributes and S-Shield of Supergirl, the iconic DC Comics super heroine. The collection, created for today’s 4-12-year-old girls, is now available exclusively at JCPenney, just in time for the back-to-school season.

The line retails from $20 - $38, making it affordable and exciting for girls to style themselves like a Supergirl. The collection includes active fleece, dresses and tunics, knit pants, signature Supergirl tees, dancewear, fashion leggings, shrug tops and more.

Nastia will conduct personal appearances to promote Supergirl by Nastia at the following JCPenney locations:

For the past four years, Warner Bros. has been supporting female athletes with the Supergirl Jam, the only large-scale, all-girls action sports competition and lifestyle/music festival. The Supergirl S-Shield is the universally recognized symbol of strength and leadership under which today’s sports girls unite. Nastia will make a special appearance at this year’s Supergirl Jam set to take place on August 22 in Venice Beach, CA.

GK is a proud sponsor of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. in the fight against Breast Cancer. NBCF saves lives by increasing awareness of Breast Cancer through education, research and by providing mammograms to those in need.

“We see taking part in the fight against Breast Cancer as a responsibility,” noted Kelly McKeown, Marketing Manager at GK / Elite Sportswear. “A majority of gymnasts, cheerleaders and dancers are young girls who will either face Breast Cancer in their lifetime, or know people who will face it. By helping educate them about Breast Cancer, we hope to save more lives.” According to the American Cancer Society one in eight women will get breast cancer. With early detection there is a 95% survival rate.

GK has supported Breast Cancer awareness in Gymnastics for the past four years through its association with The University of Alabama “Power of Pink” gymnastics meets. “Power of Pink” began in 2004 by Coach Sarah Patterson at the University of Alabama, who decided to use her Gymnastics coaching position as a platform to raise awareness in the fight against Breast Cancer. Each of the 3 meets averaged over 14,000 fans to support The Cause. GK designed special commemorative leotards and clothing for the participants of these events.

The Danish team of Peter Jensen and Daniel Praest won the Silver medal in Mens Synchronized Trampoline at the in the fifth and final World Cup. The 2009 Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup Series was held at the Amselstieg Sports Hall in Salzgitter, Germany.

GK is the official tumbling apparel sponsor of the Trampoline and Tumbling Team of Denmark. GK provides gymnastics and tumbling clothes for the team including comp shirts, gymnasitcs pants and gymnastics shorts.

The Salzgitter World Cup, the last leg of the World Cup Series, determined the winners of the 2009 World Cup Series, which is based on the four best World Cup results of each gymnast. Gymnasts collect World Cup points ranging from 50 points for the 1st place to 6 pts for the 16th place. The previous legs of these 2009 World Cup Series took place in Loule, Portugal, last September; in Sofia, Bulgaria, in April; in Ostend, Belgium, in August; and in Zielona Gora, Poland, last weekend.

The World Cup format features a preliminary round, with the top eight gymnasts or pairs advancing to the finals (a maximum of two individuals or one pair per country may advance in final).

Last Friday, USA Gymnastics launched a fundraising effort with the gymnastics coaches at Cal State Fullerton to support the school's continued involvement in women's gymnastics. The response has been very positive, and nearly $25,000 has been promised thus far toward Cal State Fullerton's goal of $50,000-$100,000.
