Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., March 2, 2010 – The 36 gymnast field is now set for the 2010 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup on March 5, 2010, at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. The final two competitors – Madison Krentz of Cave Creek, Ariz./Arizona Sunrays and Jaclyn McCartin of West Covina, Calif./Charter Oak Gliders – were selected this past weekend at the Long Beach (Calif.) Open. During seven weeks of competition, 36 gymnasts from 17 states were selected from the 15 invitationals in the Nastia Liukin Cup Series to compete in the inaugural Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup.

“It’s important for me to be able to give back to the gymnastics community that has supported me so much,” said 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin of Parker, Texas. “The Supergirl Cup is a great way to give girls the chance to compete, shoot for their dreams, and let their inner Supergirl take flight.”

“We are so excited to be hosting the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup for these athletes,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “This event will allow some of our top Junior Olympic gymnasts to experience gymnastics like an elite athlete and provide a chance for them to mingle with some of the best in the sport. It is going to be a fun weekend in Worcester.”

Each of the 15 invitationals that comprised the Nastia Liukin Cup Series selected a minimum of two athletes from the respective Level 10/open fields to compete in the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup, a joint venture between Warner Bros. Consumer Products, USA Gymnastics and Liukin. The Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup and the accompanying Nastia Liukin Cup Series provide a unique competitive opportunity for the country’s rising female gymnasts. The complete list of participants is included below.

“Nastia Liukin is the perfect brand ambassador for this initiative and a person who embodies the attributes of Supergirl in her own right,” said Karen McTier, executive vice president, domestic licensing and worldwide marketing, Warner Bros. Pink Invitational - Over 1500 Gymnasts Compete for the Cause

Over 1500 Gymnasts gathered in Eastern Pennsylvania for the Pink Invitational Gymnastics meet February 26-28. The Pink Invitational meet supports Unite For Her - in thier fight against Breast Cancer.

As the Official Apparel sponsor, GK provided Pink commemorative Pink Invitational Gymnastics Leotards for all participants. Over 1,500 girls compete from 55 gyms across the region; all wearing the same GK pink leo and representing the unity that we strive for in our community.

UNITE FOR HER is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women affected by breast cancer and their families, and sponsoring events providing hands on support and education.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer Donation

A national organization dedicated to empowering all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life. Gymnasts Unite Grants

Wellness Days

Unite for HER, in partnership with local hospitals, will host Breast Cancer Wellness Days. The events will introduce patients to adjuvant therapies designed to help women become fully restored. Attendees will meet with medical, nutrition, counseling, and acupuncture professionals to learn about hands-on strategies that will support their health and wellness.

Education

Through the Pink Invitational-Gymnasts Unite event, our goal is to educate, empower and bring awareness to young women and girls about breast health care, nutrition, organic products, and healthy lifestyle choices, as well as raising funds for those affected by breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness - Gymnast Unite Grant Program

Even though October has passed us by, we should still be thinking on how breast cancer affects many lives. In February 2009, the inaugural Pink Invitational - Gymnast Unite Competition was held to give awareness and benefit women with breast cancer (gymnastic leotards provided by GK). This competition was such an overwhelming success, the Pink Invitational, nonprofit organization was founded. This new nonprofit organization is to help further the development and fulfill outreach opportunities and objectives for those affected by breast cancer, focusing primarily on gymnasts and their families.

The Pink Invitational, nonprofit organization announced on Dec 7th that they will be offering three $1,000 grants to qualifying gymnasts, whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. This is all with the intent to ease the emotional and financial burden experienced as they battle the disease.

B"lack Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, which is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. The term dates back to at least 1966, although its usage was primarily on the East coast. The term has become more common in other parts of the country since 2000. Because Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, Black Friday occurs between the 22nd and the 29th of November.

Retailers often decorate for the Christmas and holiday season weeks beforehand. Many retailers open extremely early, with most of the retailers typically opening at 5AM or even earlier. Some of the larger retailers (depending on the location) such as Sears, Best Buy, Macy's, Toys "R" Us, and Walmart have been reported to open as early as midnight on the start of Black Friday in localized areas and remain open for 24 hours throughout the day until midnight the following Saturday. Upon opening, retailers offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to draw people to their stores. Although Black Friday, as the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season at least since the start of the modern Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the term "Black Friday" has been traced back only to the 1960s.

The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that. More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red (i.e., posting a loss on the books) to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).

Last Friday the Future Stars of Mens Gymnastics competed in USA-Gymnastics Future Stars National Championships at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs Colorado. As a long time supported of USA-Gymnastics development programs, GK again dontated Gymnastics Warm Up Suits to all participants (Athletes and coaches) at the event!

The Future Stars program is designed is to identify talented athletes and to get them started on the right developmental path to national and international success. The program uses a special competitive routine format to evaluate the skill, strength and flexibility development of the athlete.

The Future Stars National Championships features the USA’s best 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds in the United States who perform special Future Stars competitive routines. Based on the results at the championships, USA Gymnastics identifies the Future Stars Developmental Team, which includes the top 18 gymnasts in both the 10- and 11-year-old divisions and 14 gymnasts in the 12-year-old division. The top nine athletes in the 10- and 11-year-old divisions and the top seven athletes in the 12-year-old division will be invited to a special Future Stars camp to be held at the USOTC next summer.

The Future Stars National Championships are held in conjunction with the National Coaches Workshop, the premier educational event for the men’s program. In addition to the competition, Future Stars athletes and their parents will be able to participate in workshop activities that feature lectures, technical presentations, and hands-on coaching sessions. Presenters include Junior National Coaching Staff members, National Team coaches, sports science personnel, USOC staff and special guests.

Trampoline and Tumbling Worlds on Universal Sports

The world’s best trampoline and tumbling gymnasts who have converged on St. Petersburg, Russia, for the 2009 World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships, Nov. 11-14, at the St. Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex. Qualification rounds begin on Nov. 11, with finals on Nov. 12-14.

GK Endorsee Michael Devine will be among the US Team delegation in St Petersburg.

Universal Sports will carry same-day coverage of the finals on Nov. 13-14 on universalsports.com. Universal Sports also will air a highlights show on its TV network later in November. During the competition, results, photos and other information will be available on usa-gymnastics.org.

For the various qualification rounds, the U.S. gymnasts are in the following groups: men’s trampoline, 7 (of 7); women’s trampoline, 5 (of 6); men’s tumbling, 3 (of 4); women’s tumbling, 3 (of 3); men’s double mini-trampoline, 3 (of 4); women’s double mini, 2 (of 3); men’s synchronized trampoline, 1 (Dooley/Gluckstein) and 3 (White/Devine) (of 3); and women’s synchro, 1 (of 2).

The U.S. Team for World Championships was determined by placement in the World Championships Selection Points System. Athletes gained points based on placements at three events: U.S. Elite Challenge; Visa Championships; and the Final Selection Event, which concluded on Sept. 26. The top two athletes in the selection system rankings automatically qualified for the team and additional athletes were named by the selection committee.

Americans take to sports heroes who seem trustworthy and sincere. Olympic favorite Shawn Johnson leads the pack.

Since the Olympic Games in Beijing, gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson has played it just right. She’s been out there on the CMT Music Awards and Dancing With the Stars. And that’s the reason–in addition to talent of course–that Johnson is America’s most-liked sports figure, according to the latest surveys conducted by E-Poll Market Research, an Encino, Calif.-based research firm that tracks celebrity likability ratings.

“She didn’t overexpose herself after the Olympics,” says E-Poll Chief Executive Gerry Philpott of Johnson, who’s seen by the bulk of the public as “charming” and “warm,” according to the surveys.

There’s also the advantage of showing versatility: Johnson didn’t just sign up for Dancing With the Stars, she won. “You don’t do that with just athletic ability, you need a style that wins over hearts and minds,” says Philpott.

E-Poll scientifically surveyed a representative sample of 1,100 people age 13 and over. Candidates were limited to active athletes, coaches or commentators with a minimum 10% awareness rating.

The most common adjective fans use to describe their favorites: trustworthy. All exude a consistency and familiarity that leads fans to believe they’d be perfect barroom buddies or spouses, Philpott points out.

“It means they’re seen as dependable, people think ‘I can count on them,’ ” Philpott says. The key, apparently, is not biting off too much all at once. It worked for Johnson

A teen gymnast who took Olympic gold (plus three silvers) in Beijing a year ago, Johnson has continued to wow the public this year with an ESPY award from ESPN for best female U.S. Olympian while scoring endorsement deals with McDonald's and Secret deodorant, among others. Her myriad TV appearances in 2009 included award presentations at the CMT Music Award and Teen Choice Award, plus a first-place finish on ABC's Dancing With the Stars.
