Former GK Rep Sarah Brown Becomes Head Coach for EMU Eagles

We couldn’t be more excited and proud of our Michigan Special Order Representative, Sarah Brown who just accepted a position as the new women’s gymnastics head coach for Eastern Michigan University Eagles! Taking over her GK responsibilities while she pursues this fantastic opportunity will be Brooke Parker and Judi Cook.

Recently working for the past year as assistant coach at the University of Michigan, Sarah officially began her role in her new position on July 27th. Her skilled expertise includes beam and floor choreography and creations of routine practice schedules, she is sure to take this Ypsilanti, MI team to a whole new level. The EMU Eagles look forward to competing in the Mid-American Conference Championship and then moving on to the NCAA Championships. Her previous Wolverine team won the Big Ten Conference Championship as well as brought home individual Big Ten titles on uneven bars, beam and floor exercise. She is so pleased to also have a hand in coaching the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

sarah_brown_emuWith all of these accomplishments, she brings with her years in the gymnastics industry. Earning a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies she focused on business and communication and then went on to gain a master’s of education in counseling psychology with an emphasis in sports psychology in 2012. She was the assistant gymnastics coach for Southeast Missouri State University for three years earning her the Midwest Independent Conference Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2014. Her team won the championships in the 2014 MIC floor, vault, and bars, she assisted in coaching the 2013 and 2014 MIC Freshman of the Year. In her coaching role and also being the Director of Operations for Missouri, she managed to help four athletes to qualify for the NCAA Regionals in the all-around in 2013, 2014, and 2015. For both teams she assisted with campus recruiting as well as participating in many daily operations including making team travel plans, community service, and handling social media and outreach. In her early days, she coached at Flipz USA Gymnastics for six years training 2-18 year olds at all levels in the sport of gymnastics. With all of this skilled expertise, Sarah is sure to have a brilliant future with her new team.

Sarah is very enthusiastic about her new role and states, “I’d like to thank Heather Lyke, UMU’s VP/Director of Athletics and the entire athletic department for the opportunity to continue building upon Eastern Michigan’s success.” She welcomes her new team with open arms. “My husband and I are thrilled to be a part of the EMU family, and I’m looking forward to another strong season of Eagles gymnastics. The welcome response has been overwhelming and I can’t wait to start preparing for the 2017 season”, Sarah adds.

If Sarah’s resume wasn’t impressive enough, there’s more! She was also an incredible gymnast herself. Competing for Missouri and Utah from 2006 through 2010 she earned a spot on the Mizzou Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. She was even nominated for  the Honda Broderick Cup Award as a four-time All-American in 2010, and named the Women’s Intersport Network Collegiate Sportswoman of the Year in 2009 and 2010. Other accomplishments include becoming the University of Missouri’s Female Athlete of the Year and  South Central Regional Gymnast of the Year. The list goes on. She earned the Director of Athletics Leadership Award, became a nine-time All-Big 12 honoree and was even the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 2008. Backing up to her 2007 year at Utah she helped the team finish as runner-ups at the NCAA Championships.
