GK Elite

From May 7th through 12th, athletes from across the country descended on Cincinnati, Ohio for the P&G U.S. Men's Junior Olympic Championships at the Duke Energy Center.  This USA Gymnastics event features competition for regional teams, all-around, and individual apparatus.  The event culminates with the Level 9 and Level 10 Championships toward the end of the week long event.  The Junior Olympics are a qualifier for Level 10 gymnasts to advance to the Visa Championships - set this year for June 7-10 in St. Louis, Missouri. 

GK continued its charitable support of the Junior Olympic Men's Program with its donation of all of the gymnastics apparel for the competitors.  Each athlete received GK's Men's Gymnastics Competitive Shirt Style 1946 with a U back, strong color insets at shoulders with piping and bold back design, Men's Straight Leg Gymnastics Shorts Style 1817, and a GK Warm-Up in Black and Platinum DryTech.  Nine different colors were used to signify each region competing.

For the 1996 Atlanta games, GK outfitted four Olympic teams from all over the world.  As more and more teams wanted to wear GK, the demand was almost overwhelming.  Teams and athletes had unique requests and made many changes, up to the last minute.  In keeping with our goal of excellent service, some apparel was hand carried to Atlanta to meet those last minute needs.

GK appeared on the podium over and over again, best of all - for the Women's All Around Gold Medal - won by Lilia Podkopayeva from the Ukraine.  GK outfitted the Ukrainian national team, a gymnastics powerhouse, for the next eight years.

GK's U.S. Gymnastics Sales Representatives descended upon GK headquarters in April 2012 for their annual sales meeting.  Sales Reps from all over the United States spent three agenda-packed days in Reading, Pennsylvania brainstorming and covering a variety of wide ranging topics.  The gymnastics representatives were very excited to get their hands on a hot-off-the-presses copy of the 2012-2013 Competitive Catalog!

The newest GK leotard designs were showcased for representatives from the women's and men's competitive leotard collection, in-stock leotards, and essentials collections.  The representatives also enjoyed the 2011 company recap and tour of the GK facility which is always a highlight no matter how many times you've experienced it. 

Finally, yearly sales awards were handed out along with years of service recognition awards.  One special award was bestowed on Ms. June Blackman, Sales Representative for Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, for her 20 years of stellar service with GK.  Congratulations June!

Everyday Champion Daniela B., a Level 7 gymnast from Boynton Beach, Florida, has been doing gymnastics for just two and half years.  She trains at American Twisters Gymnastics in Coconut Creek, Florida.

Holly Thomas joined the GK Elite Sportswear family in the fall of 2011. She may be new to GK, but she is not new to Northern California. Holly has been active in the Northern California gymnastics community for over 25 years as a gymnast, a coach, and as a nationally rated judge.

Holly competed at the club level through Class I until the age of 13. She stayed with the sport, starting to coach at age 16 and judging at age 17.  When she began college at The University of California, Davis, she took a tumbling class just for fun. The class instructor was also the coach of the UCDavis women’s gymnastic team invited Holly to join the team. As unlikely as it was to return to competitive gymnastics after 5 years, Holly competed for the Aggies from 1994-1997, primarily on beam and floor. Holly graduated from UCDavis and went on to teach Kindergarten for eight years.

Holly resides in Ripon, California with her husband, who is also a teacher, and their two children, Jacob and Paige.  Holly has recently retired from coaching, but continues to judge when not representing GK at gymnastics meets.

Recently, GK had the pleasure of hosting Sabrina Vega for a photo shoot for the future "Back to School" Essentials catalog. Sabrina is a current member of the U.S. National Team.  Sabrina placed third in the all-around at her first major meet as a Senior, the 2011 CoverGirl Classic in Chicago, Illinois.  She captured Silver on Floor and finished fourth on vault.  At the 2011 U.S. National Championships, Sabrina placed fifth in the all-around.  As a Junior National Team Member, Sabrina captured Gold on the floor exercise, Bronze on balance beam, and finished fourth in the all-around at the 2009 Junior National championships.  Internationally, at the 2009 Junior Pan American Games in Brazil, Sabrina assisted her team in capturing the Gold medal and also won two individual Silvers in the all-around and on uneven bars.

GK had the chance to talk with Sabrina in between shots.

GK:  Sabrina, how old are you and where are you from?

Sabrina:  I’m 16 years old and I’m from Carmel, New York.

GK: What gym do you train at?

Sabrina: I train at Dynamic Gymnastics.

GK:  How long have you been a gymnast?

Sabrina: I’ve been a gymnast for 11 years now.

GK: What got you started in gymnastics?

Sabrina: I was invited to a birthday party when I was five years old and I just enjoyed it so much, I just kept going and going.  My mom asked if I wanted to do gymnastics and I said, Yes!

GK: Who is your role model and why.

Sabrina: My role models are all of the girls who made it to the Olympic team because that’s my main goal. 

GK: As you train for 2012, what has been your inspiration?

Sabrina: My inspiration is just to achieve my dream and making that Olympic team would mean everything!

GK: So, making the Olympic Team would be the goal you are training for? 

Sabrina: Definitely!

GK continues its Breast Cancer Awareness Leotard Collection in 2012.  This inspiring collection of gymnastics leotards is an extension of GK’s partnership with the annual Pink Invitational that took place in February of this year at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The Pink Invitational is an annual meet organized by Unite for HER, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing breast cancer awareness programs and initiatives.  This year’s event raised $250,000!  As a proud sponsor of Unite for HER, GK is pleased to continue the fundraising by contributing 5% of sales of the specialized leotard collection to Unite for HER.

GK, with the support of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, donated the first in a line of couture gymnastics leotards to the Pink Invitational outreach gymnastics meet on February 24 – 26, 2012 for a fundraising opportunity.  The couture leotard was raffled off with proceeds benefiting Unite for HER, a non-profit organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness programs for women.  The one-of-a-kind gymnastics leotard carries an approximate retail value of $5,000 and is part of GK’s 2012–2013 Couture Collection. 

Raffle tickets were sold at the Pink Invitational meet and online raising over $4,300 for Unite for HER.  One proud grandfather of an athlete participating in the meet bought 10 tickets for his granddaughter.  That lucky athlete was Bryn Kanagy, a level 4 gymnast from Centre Elite Gymnastics in State College, PA. On Friday, April 20, 2012, Kelly Christman, Sr. Marketing Manager for GK Gymnastics, hand delivered the one-of-a-kind leotard to Miss Kanagy during her gymnastics practice at Centre Elite.  The stunning leotard was put on display at the gym and after much ooh-ing and ahh-ing, was presented to Miss Kanagy who, after posing for some pictures, promptly tried on her couture creation right over her workout leo - turning the mat at Centre Elite into an instant runway.
